China‘s education has been vastlyunderestimated

We completed our Bachelor's degrees at University College London and have been running an online education platform and study abroad agency for three years, primarily assisting Chinese students in applying overseas. Initially, we had some preconceived notions about Chinese academia, but after Tianyi began a PhD at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we were astounded by the advances in Chinese research and education. China offers outstanding research opportunities, ample funding, and world-class education. However, the cumbersome and fragmented application process often discourages international applicants. That's why we started this project — to simplify the process and help more students from around the world discover and pursue an education in China.

China's Research Strength Leads Globally in Both Quantity and Quality

In 2016, China surpassed the United States to become the world leader in the number of published papers. According to Science in 2022, China rose to first place in the number of most cited papers.

Research conducted by Japan’s National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP), tallied the top 1% of papers in terms of citations, and China rose to first place. Using that measure, China accounted for 27.2% of the most cited papers published in 2018, 2019, and 2020, and the United States for 24.9%. Next was the United Kingdom, with 5.5%; Japan was in 10th place.

According to Nature in 2022, China overtook the United States in the Nature Index, an index that tracks the affiliations of high-quality scientific articles for contributions to natural sciences articles for the first time.

Also according to research conducted by Caroline Wagner, Milton & Roslyn Wolf Chair in International Affairs, The Ohio State University. In the top 1% of most cited AI research, Chinese papers outnumbered U.S. papers by a 2-to-1 ratio. Similar patterns can be seen with China leading in the top 1% of most cited papers in nanoscience, chemistry and transportation. Their research also found that Chinese research was surprisingly novel and creative – and not simply copying Western researchers.

As someone who has conducted research in both China and the UK, I can confidently state that Chinese laboratories are genuinely world-class. Many of the most modern labs have recently been created and are outfitted with cutting-edge technology and amenities. In terms of productivity, there are numerous possibilities to publish high-quality articles, similar to those in the United States, and frequently more so than in the United Kingdom. However, the general tempo is significantly quicker.
